Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and given more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.

This involved trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could facilitate a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's aim to disable the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with tracking devices.

They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to leave his home for medical care, saying he needed frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

The former president was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the national vote to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a scheme which involved plans to assassinate Lula and his running partner, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was inaugurated without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, thousands of his followers attacked and damaged government buildings in the federal district, Brasília.

The police stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the trial a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the next presidential race.
