Colombia's Leader Says 'I Shall Resort to Weapons Once More' should United States Launches an Attack.

President Trump and his Colombian counterpart have escalated the tone in their verbal conflict, further raising strains in their relations following American military units targeted Venezuela in an operation to oust President Nicolás Maduro from office.

"He has cocaine mills and processing labs and his time is running out," Trump added.

Rising Tensions coupled with Allegations

Addressing journalists on Sunday, the American leader threatened similar use of force towards the South American nation, stating the nation faces serious problems and “run by an unwell individual who enjoys creating cocaine and distributing it to America."

While Colombia is the leading source of the narcotic, there is no evidence linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly tied to the illicit industry.

A Frayed Relationship

Colombia was historically a key ally of the US in the struggle against drug trafficking and enjoyed wide political approval from American politicians, but relations have deteriorated dramatically following Trump came to office.

Colombia’s illicit drug economy is largely controlled by illegal armed groups such as the Clan del Golfo, another leftist insurgency and renegade units of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), the majority of whose members laid down arms subsequent to a landmark accord.

The President's Strong Answer

In response to a query if a military operation comparable to Venezuela was on the cards regarding Colombia, Trump responded: "I like the sound of that to me personally."

President Petro, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who demobilised in the last century, firmly denied Trump's claims. "I am not illegitimate and I am not a narco," he declared.

"He comments without knowledge. End the false accusations," he wrote online.

"Should American forces attack rural communities, they will become thousands of guerrillas in the mountains. And should they arrest me, which a significant portion of the population loves and respects, they will unleash the powerful force of the nation," he admonished.

From Guerrilla to President

He passed part of his youth participating of the leftist M-19 insurgent movement although reports indicate that he never participated in combat. Upon leaving the group, he participated in drafting a new constitution over three decades ago and later became a respected lawmaker. He served as mayor of the capital city before winning the nation's highest office.

"I made a vow to never again hold a weapon again ... but for the homeland I will take up arms again," he said.

Heightened Measures and Cross-Political Opposition

Minister Pedro Sánchez reported that Petro's security detail had received additional support.

Several members of Colombia’s political right have allied themselves with Trump's stance, yet figures from across the ideological divide have denounced the threats of American military action targeting Colombia.

Bilateral and Economic Strains

American authorities cancelled Petro’s visa after he urged US troops to disobey unlawful commands. Later, in October, the US enacted economic restrictions against the president, his wife and a number of associates.

Simultaneously the US was building up its forces near Venezuela and targeting alleged narcotics traffickers to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, the US executed strikes on maritime targets off the Pacific coast off the Colombian coast.
